Dr Edwin Mavunika Mapara MBChB (Zambia), DTM & H (South Africa), MSc. (England) is a Public Health Specialist with a passion for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis Medicine. He graduated from Medical School in 1987, worked in Lusaka and then Livingstone, Zambia.In 1990 he re-located to Botswana and was stationed at Athlone Hospital for 12 years. He was a national consultant on HIV/AIDS programmes.

Dr Mapara is credited with the formation of four HIV/AIDS "best practice” programmes – Livingstone Anti-AIDS Project (Zambia), Athlone AIDS Awareness Programme, The Athlone Health Resource Centre (Botswana) and Community Resource Centre (England).

With over twenty years of HIV/AIDS experience, Dr Mapara’s ‘niche’ is teaching and sharing experiences using “Pictures in AIDucation”.In 1997 he was promoted to Chief Medical Officer and in August 2001 he was appointed to head the Clinical unit of The National Antiretroviral Therapy Programme.

Dr Mapara has shared his experiences at Cambridge and Thames Valley Universities, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, National Institute of African Studies and was the Guest Speaker at World Health Organisation on 1st December 2004.

He is currently based at Community Health Action Trust (CHAT), London.
