PEGS represents an Action Oriented team of
Development Experts who possess relevant complementary skills. We use our
skills innovatively to bring real and sustainable advantages to the poor and
most disadvantaged.
We always operate in a highly participatory
manner and involve not only thelocal population but also the relevant
Government and Non-Government organisations as well as appropriate private
businesses. Thus we aim to create an
effective united front in the attempt to reduce poverty levels in line with
Global Aims.
What are the approaches to tackling development issues in resource poor countries ?
Most organisations use this general approach
Examine the symptoms using preconceived approaches
Implement a programme to address the symptoms
Monitor the anticipated decline of the problem
PEGS uses a sustainable development approach
We always look at the underlying causes in the first instance with a view to identifying the most appropriate strategies
We encouragelocal people to develop their own
strategies to tackle their own problems but also involve appropriate
Government and Non-Government Organisations as well as relevant Business Enterprises.
Thus creating a strong and United
Effort.
Our approach creates a
mutual learning process and thereby secures human resource development
Example 1- Sustainable employment
General approach: Address the symptom by creating unsustainable jobs for the unemployed
PEGS approach: Begins by investigating the causes of the high
unemployment rates and then attempt removing these causes by putting into place
the necessary organisations and structures to facilitate overall economic
development. Our “united front” tactics provide a good bases for success
Example 2 - HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea
General approach: Use Western methods to tackle the perceived medical problem
PEGS Approach: Address the underlying cultural problems by
using Social Market Research and use the findings as basis for mounting a
target specific Social Marketing strategy that will result in the necessary
attitudinal and behavioural changes.
Example 3 - Food security
General approach: Address the symptoms through food aid and charitable works
PEGS approach: Address the underlying problem by providing opportunities for the resource poor to grow amd sell crops. Make sure that their issue of savings and long term security are properly addressed.
